Kural in Tamil :அறத்திற்கே அன்புசார் பென்ப அறியார்
மறத்திற்கும் அஃதே துணை.
Transliteration :araththirkke anbusaar benbar ariyaar
maraththirkkum agdhe thunai.
Translation :The unwise deem love virtue only can sustain,
It also helps the man who evil would restrain.
Meaning :The ignorant say that love is an ally to virtue only, but it is also a help to get out of vice.
Explanation :1. Aram - Righteous, Maram - unrighteous/ immoral
People who do not understand the true meaning of love would say that love is a feeling that is shared between two righteous individuals. In this case both the individuals reciprocate the same feeling towards the other which in turn grows love and friendship amongst others. But thiruvalluvar says, love is not something that you express towards a person who does good to you, instead it is something that you show even when the opposite party is not doing good to you. In which the person who errs feels ashamed and will understand his mistake and will love you in return which, makes love even more stronger and abundant in the world.
2. Aram - Peace/righteous, Maram - Bravery/war-like
The other interpretation of this couplet is, ignorant people say that love is the source only to good deeds and righteousness. But, Valluvar says, love is the source also to bravery, war-like courage (which is often related to weapons and physical strength over others). This raises at the virtue of a true individual or soldier who stands up to evil to establish righteousness and good in this world.
